A new front door: Less noise, better decisions

The Hawley Energy website has had a proper rebuild.

Not a lick of paint. Not a new set of clever words wrapped around the same old thinking.

This is Hawley Energy v2.

It reflects how we actually work with organisations now: starting with evidence, making sense of the problem, then helping clients take the right action. Monitoring. Compliance. Procurement. Infrastructure. Projects. Finance.

One connected route, rather than six disconnected conversations.

The front door to that route is Enerlyse.

Because before you change a contract, install a heat pump, apply for a bigger grid connection or plan a decarbonisation strategy, you need to know what your building is doing today.

That sounds obvious. It is not how most organisations operate.

Buildings lie: Your bill only tells part of the story

A building can look completely normal while wasting money every hour.

The lights are on. The heating works. The cooling seems fine. Nobody is complaining. The bills arrive, get approved and disappear into the finance system.

Then one day there is a spike, a failed system, a compliance question or an uncomfortable board meeting.

Everyone scrambles.

Facilities investigates. Finance searches for old invoices. Operations asks whether anything has changed. Sustainability tries to calculate the carbon impact. Someone opens a spreadsheet last touched in 2022.

That is reactive effort.

Procurement needs evidence

Baseline Power helps organisations buy energy with clearer pricing, transparent fees and a strategy that makes commercial sense.

But procurement is stronger when it reflects the way your estate actually operates. Consumption patterns, peak demand, seasonal changes and site performance all matter.

Without that evidence, you are buying based on assumptions.

ESOS needs more than a deadline

ESOS matters. We have helped organisations navigate the scheme since it began. But ESOS is one spoke of the wheel, not the gate to the whole energy strategy.

Compliance should not be the only reason you look at your buildings.

The best ESOS work gives you a defensible account of performance and a prioritised set of actions. The worst becomes another report filed away until the next deadline.

Infrastructure needs a proper demand model

Electrification is not just a matter of choosing equipment.

Heat pumps, EV charging and battery storage all affect electrical demand. DNO applications can take 12 to 18 months. Internal distribution upgrades can introduce further cost, disruption and risk.

You need to understand your current load profile before modelling the future one.

That means monitoring first. Then demand modelling. Then a sensible plan for the grid, the building and the budget.

Projects need measurement before promises

Whether the answer is LED lighting, HVAC optimisation, refrigeration improvements, solar PV, heat pumps or battery storage, the starting point should be the same.

What is the building doing now?

What is the likely saving?

What will change operationally?

How will we verify the result?

Finance needs a credible business case

Evidence then action: Start with the boring stuff

The first step is rarely glamorous.

It is usually checking the data.

Here is where I would start with any substantial commercial estate.

1. List every site and meter.
   Confirm what each meter serves, who owns the data and whether there are gaps.

2. Check the bills against the contracts.
   Look for incorrect rates, estimated reads, missing sites, duplicated charges and unexplained changes.

3. Review baseload power.
   Compare overnight, weekend and holiday consumption. Buildings should not operate at Tuesday lunchtime levels when they are empty.

4. Look for patterns, not isolated events.
   A single high bill may be weather, occupancy or an operational change. A repeating pattern is more useful.

5. Connect consumption to reality.
   Compare energy use with opening hours, production, occupancy, weather and known plant changes.

6. Choose one action and measure it.
   Do not launch a 40-point improvement programme before proving what works. Fix one clear issue, track the result and build from there.

This is not complicated. It is disciplined.

The difficulty is that most teams do not have the time, data quality or specialist capacity to do it consistently across an estate. That is where an energy consultancy in the UK should earn its keep.

Not by making the problem sound more complicated.
